WhatsApp and teenagers: what can parents manage, and what stays private?
On 30 September, WhatsApp announced optional parental controls for teenagers. They allow parents to manage privacy settings and feature access, and receive alerts about certain activity. They do not reveal the content of personal chats or calls.
Both the teenager and the adult must agree to link their accounts. These controls are for ages 13–17; the adult must be at least 18. The rollout is gradual, so the option may not be available in your region yet.
The carousel covers the essentials and where to start. My suggestion: discuss boundaries first and review the options together.
