You mention something at home and later see it in your feed, although you do not remember searching for it. It is understandable to wonder whether your phone heard the conversation. The coincidence deserves attention, but cannot establish its cause on its own. To investigate, separate what you saw from what you can check.
“But I never searched for it”
Imagine mentioning that you want a coffee machine and then seeing an advert for one. This is an illustrative example, not an investigated case. An explicit search is only one way of expressing interest: Meta explains that its systems combine predictions based on signals such as interactions and the likelihood that you will share a post. Data can also come from other businesses
In June 2026, Meta announced plans to expand its use of information other businesses already shared with it, such as purchases or activity on external websites. Alongside adverts, this data could help personalise content and AI responses. The announcement described a rollout across countries and changes to controls; it does not establish identical availability for every account. Meta.
What the microphone can tell you
A permission means an app can access the microphone. An access log provides information about its use. Neither, on its own, explains what happened to the audio or proves that a conversation caused an advert to appear. Compare logged times with what you were doing: a call, voice message or video might explain an entry.
On Android: check apps and times
Search for Privacy dashboard in Settings and open Microphone. Review which apps accessed it and when, then check permissions for those you do not recognise or that do not need the feature. Google documents this tool for Android 12 and later. The history and menu route can vary by version and manufacturer. Google.
On iPhone: enable the report to log access
In Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone, you can review permissions. In Privacy & Security, enable App Privacy Report to check sensor access. Apple says it is available from iOS 15.2 and begins collecting information when enabled: it does not reconstruct earlier activity. Logging access does not mean recording the audio of your conversations. Apple Apple.
Open the advert’s menu too
First identify whether you are seeing advertising or a recommendation. On a Meta advert, look for “Why am I seeing this ad?” or a similar option. The explanation can show signals used to select it and provide access to preferences. Meta has also announced changes to how this information is presented, so menu names may vary. Meta Meta.
Review controls for activity received from other businesses. Meta announced their reorganisation in 2026, with rollout differences. Removing microphone permission does not remove that other data. For recommended posts, options such as “Not interested” or “Hide” can help you adjust what you see. Meta Meta.
The next time it happens
Note what appeared, in which app, and whether it carried an advertising label. If you save a screenshot, avoid including private information. Check the menu and access logs before attributing a cause. These steps help you review permissions and preferences; they do not amount to a complete investigation of how each post was selected.
