When AI works for you: from a Gemini idea to a tool for your website

A quotation calculator explores how to create an app with AI, customise it in Google Sites and share it with others.

On 19 October, Google announced a feature for exporting interactive apps created in Gemini to Google Sites. The process generates a private draft you can edit before publishing. For anyone looking to add useful tools to a page, the integration offers a route from an idea to an application their visitors can use. Export Gemini apps to Google Sites — Google Workspace.

Start with an everyday task. For example, calculating a quotation from working hours, an hourly rate, materials and other expenses. Explaining your requirements, checking the output and adapting the page are part of the process.

Step 1: turn the need into an instruction

Open Gemini and ask it to generate an interactive app. Your instruction should define the fields, calculations and how the result should be displayed.

You can copy this prompt:

Act as an expert web developer. Create a modern, interactive web application (self-contained HTML, CSS and JavaScript) that works as a quotation calculator. It must include interactive fields for: 1. Working hours. 2. Hourly rate (in USD). 3. Cost of materials (in USD). 4. Other expenses (in USD). The interface must calculate the total in real time in US dollars ($ USD) and display a clear, step-by-step breakdown underneath. Use a clean, professional, responsive design.

HTML, CSS and JavaScript are the requested technologies for organising the content, defining its appearance and performing calculations. You can request further changes if fields are missing, labels are confusing or the design needs adjustment.

Step 2: transfer the app to Google Sites

Once Gemini has generated the interactive app, open its options and select Export → Google Sites.

The draft lets you continue editing the page before sharing it.

According to Google, this action adds the app to a new private draft where editing can continue. Export requires Gemini access and, for organisational accounts, Google Sites enabled with permission to create and edit sites. Export Gemini apps to Google Sites — Google Workspace.

If you only receive code, check that you have opened the interactive app and can locate its export option.

Step 3: customise the page and check the tool

Open the draft in Google Sites. Add a title, description and visual elements that identify your page. You can also add a contact section if it serves the site’s purpose.

Explain what the calculator does and what it excludes. In this example, the quotation adds labour, materials and other expenses; tax and discounts are not included.

Then check a known calculation: four hours at US$25 comes to US$100; materials, US$30; other expenses, US$20. Expected total: US$150.

This is an illustrative example for checking the arithmetic. Try missing values, negative numbers and decimals too.

Review the preview for computers and phones. Check that instructions are readable, fields can be completed and the result can be viewed comfortably.

Step 4: publish and share

Once you have checked the content and functionality, select Publish. Configure the site’s address and who can view it. Then open the published address to check access. Publish and share your site — Google Sites Help.

To use a custom domain, you will need to connect it and complete its configuration. Publishing in Google Sites does not automatically add the calculator to a website hosted by another service. Use a custom domain — Google Sites Help.

A process to remember

Prompt — Create → Export — Transfer → Publish — Launch.

Your decisions sit between these stages: what the tool needs, how it should be presented and which results it should deliver.

A quotation calculator is a starting point. What task that you or your visitors repeat would you turn into an app for your website?
